Abstract The article examines the mechanisms of cold-season temperature regimes influencing the soil phosphate regime. Based on the analysis of Russian and international scientific literature, the main processes of phosphorus transformation during soil freezing and thawing are characterized: desorption from mineral and organic complexes, microbial biomass lysis, and redistribution of phosphorus forms. It is shown that the nature and intensity of these processes are determined by the rate of freezing, the number of freeze-thaw cycles, soil properties (particle size distribution, organic matter content, pH, iron and aluminum oxide content) and snow cover depth. The practical significance of these patterns for managing phosphorus nutrition of crops in temperate continental and sharply continental climates is discussed.
