Abstract The article examines the mechanism of the impact of winter thaws, accompanied by repeated air temperature transitions through 0°C, on changes in potassium mobility in the arable soil horizon. It is demonstrated that "freezing-thawing" cycles (analogous to "wetting-drying" cycles) provoke non-exchangeable fixation of potassium ions by the crystal lattice of clay minerals of the silt fraction. As a result of this physicochemical process, readily available exchangeable potassium transforms into a tightly bound (non-exchangeable) state, temporarily inaccessible to the root systems of winter and early spring crops.
