Effect of winter ice crust on soil aeration and redox potential

Abstract This article examines the effect of ice crust formed in winter on the soil surface on gas exchange and redox conditions in the soil profile. The physical mechanisms of aeration disturbance due to continuous ice sharply reducing oxygen diffusion are analyzed. Dose-dependent (by duration) effects are described: development of anaerobiosis, accumulation of reduced forms of iron and manganese, decrease of redox potential (Eh) to negative values. The importance of agrotechnical control of ice crust to prevent winter crop damping-off and preserve soil microbial community is emphasized.
