The duration of the period with soil temperature above +5°C as a criterion for the starting activity of nitrifying bacteria

Abstract This article examines the influence of soil temperature regime on the starting activity of nitrifying microorganisms in the spring period. The relationship between the agrometeorological indicator — the number of days with a soil temperature above +5°C — and the rate of transition of the ammonium form of nitrogen to nitrate (the nitrification process) is analyzed. The regularities of transformation of nitrogen compounds determining the availability of nutrition for agricultural crops at the initial stages of vegetation are described. The importance of integrating agrometeorological observations into the system of precision application of nitrogen fertilizers to optimize plant mineral nutrition and minimize environmental risks is emphasized.
