Climatic features of the winter period and the rate of calcium removal from the soil profile

Abstract This study examines the influence of winter climatic conditions, particularly the frequency of air temperature zero crossings, on calcium migration within the soil profile. Based on long-term data on seasonal soil freezing depth in the Russian Federation, it is shown that repeated freeze–thaw cycles can enhance the leaching and vertical transport of calcium-containing compounds. An increase in the number of zero crossings during winter has been found to potentially cause partial destruction of soil aggregates, increased profile permeability and enhanced migration of soluble Ca²⁺ forms. These processes are most pronounced in the foreststeppe and steppe zones of the European part of Russia, which are characterized by unstable winter conditions. The advisability of considering winter agrometeorological parameters when predicting the agrochemical state of soils is substantiated.
